An armyworm starts as an egg laid in a fuzzy mass of 50 to several hundred eggs on a blade of grass, a fence rail, the side of a house, a flag, a play structure, or any vertical surface near the lawn. The egg mass looks like a dirty cotton ball about the size of a dime.

Larvae (the caterpillars that cause the damage) hatch in 2 to 5 days. First instar caterpillars are tiny, often under a quarter inch long, and feed lightly. As they grow through six instars over 14 to 21 days, they get larger and hungrier. Mature larvae reach 1.5 inches long and consume roughly 85 percent of their total lifetime food in the last 2 to 4 days. This is why armyworm damage seems to explode overnight. The early stages do little visible damage. The final stages can clear a lawn in 48 hours.

Mature armyworms are green to brown striped caterpillars with an inverted Y mark on the head capsule. They have four small dark spots on the second to last segment. They feed at night and during cooler parts of the day, hiding deeper in the canopy or under thatch during peak heat.

The Three First Signs That Should Stop You

Most homeowners do not see the early feeding because the damage is small and looks like a dry spot. Three signs warrant a soap flush test even if the lawn looks fine overall.

Pinhole feeding marks on blade tips

Walk a section of lawn that looks slightly off color and pull a blade up close. Look at the upper third of the blade. Tiny circular bite marks or roughly chewed tip edges (rather than dried tip browning) indicate caterpillar feeding. The marks are small and easy to miss. They show up before the homeowner can tell anything is wrong from 20 feet away.

Small light tan patches that look like a dry spot

An early armyworm patch starts as a 1 to 3 foot circle or irregular shape of pale tan grass. It can look exactly like a heat stress patch from the curb. The difference is the texture. Heat stressed grass dries out at the tip and is still upright. Armyworm fed grass is chewed off short, often with the blade tips ragged. Run your hand across the patch. If the height is noticeably lower than the surrounding healthy turf, suspect armyworms.

Bird activity over a specific area

Heavy bird activity (especially grackles, starlings, blackbirds, robins, and mockingbirds) walking and pecking a specific section of lawn is one of the strongest predictors of armyworm presence. The birds know before you do. Multiple birds working a single zone for more than a day is worth a soap flush test.

A bonus sign is unusual moth activity around outdoor lights in the early morning or evening hours. Fall armyworm moths are gray brown with a wingspan around an inch and a half. A noticeable flush of moths near porch lights is often a 7 to 10 day warning that egg laying is happening.

The Soap Flush Test

The soap flush is the cheapest and most reliable confirmation test for both armyworms and chinch bugs. Five minutes and a kitchen ingredient.

Mix two tablespoons of lemon scented dish soap into a gallon of water. Lemon scented works because the d-limonene is irritating to insects. Skip the unscented or fragrance free versions for this test.

Pour the gallon slowly over a one square foot area at the edge of a suspected damage patch, where damaged turf meets healthy turf. Do not flush the middle of a dead patch. The caterpillars have already moved out of dead grass to fresh feeding areas. The active feeding edge is where the bugs live.

Wait 5 to 10 minutes. Watch the area. Caterpillars will surface and start moving across the wet grass trying to escape the soap. Armyworms come up green to brown with stripes. They look like small cutworms. If you see 3 or more in a square foot, you have a treatable infestation. If you see 8 or more, you have a heavy infestation and should treat the same day if at all possible.

A second flush 5 to 10 feet outside the visible damage area tells you how far the population has spread. If you find armyworms there too, the damage area is going to grow before it stops.

The 48 to 72 Hour Treatment Window

Fall armyworms feed for 14 to 21 days as larvae and consume 85 percent of their food in the last 2 to 4 days of that period. Once a flight has settled on a lawn and the larvae are mid to late stage, the lawn has 48 to 72 hours before catastrophic visible damage.

The right move when you confirm armyworms is to treat that day or no later than the next morning. We have walked properties where the homeowner planned to call us next week. By the time the appointment happened, the lawn was three quarters chewed.

What we apply

Our standard armyworm treatment is a liquid bifenthrin or a chlorantraniliprole formulation depending on the property profile and what we have already applied to the lawn that season. Bifenthrin works on contact and provides 2 to 4 weeks of residual. Chlorantraniliprole offers a longer residual (8 to 12 weeks) and is gentler on beneficial insects, which matters for properties with pollinator gardens or honeybee neighbors.

Application timing within the day matters. Armyworms feed most actively at night and at dawn. A late afternoon or early evening application puts the product where the caterpillars will encounter it during peak feeding hours. We apply between 4 and 8 p.m. when scheduling allows. Morning applications also work but the contact kill is slower because the caterpillars are deeper in the canopy during midday heat.

What homeowners can do

For DIY treatment, hose-end bifenthrin products from garden centers (Ortho Bug B Gon, Spectracide Triazicide, similar formulations) work if applied at the higher label rate and watered in lightly. Mix at the label rate for armyworms (not the lighter rate for surface insects). Treat the entire lawn (not just the visible patch) because the population is always wider than the damage. Reapply at the label interval, typically 10 to 14 days, to catch any newly hatched larvae from missed egg masses.

The most common DIY mistake is treating only the visible patch. Armyworms move. The eggs hatch over a 2 to 5 day spread. A spot treatment knocks down the visible population but the next wave of larvae hatches and the damage continues.

What Not to Do When You Suspect Armyworms

Do not water heavily right before treatment. A saturated canopy dilutes the product and reduces contact with the caterpillars. Hold off on the next irrigation cycle until the treatment has had a few hours to dry on the blades.

Do not assume the patch is heat stress and pour on more water. We have seen lawns where the homeowner doubled the irrigation runtime trying to fix what they thought was drought, only to discover armyworms a week later with significant additional damage.

Do not delay for a weekend. Friday confirmations should be treated Friday or Saturday morning at the latest. Waiting until Monday costs the lawn two full nights of feeding at peak larval appetite. Do not apply mid morning to early afternoon and walk away. The caterpillars are deep in the canopy during peak heat and the product will not reach them. Treat in the cooler hours when they are surface active.

Do not overseed or spot sod within two weeks of a confirmed armyworm event. Any remaining hatching eggs will feed on the new seedlings or sod faster than mature turf, and you will lose the establishment investment.

The Recovery Timeline After Treatment

Once the treatment is applied correctly, the recovery story is generally favorable in our service area. Bermuda and Zoysia are aggressive recovery species when the crowns survive, and most armyworm damage does not kill crowns. The caterpillars eat blade tissue down to about half an inch, then move on. The crowns and the lateral runners stay intact.

The visible timeline most lawns follow: feeding stops within 4 to 24 hours after a correct application. Bird activity diminishes within 1 to 3 days. New green leaf tissue appears at the crown level within 5 to 10 days. The damaged areas fill back in from runner growth over 4 to 8 weeks. Most Memphis area Bermuda lawns affected by armyworms in July or early August are visibly recovered by Labor Day and look indistinguishable from undamaged lawns by the first cool nights of October.

Severe infestations that stripped lawns to bare crowns can take longer, sometimes the rest of the fall growing season. Even those lawns generally come back by the following May or June, though some bare spots may need sod or sprig repair in September of the damage year.

The Cost Math on Early Treatment vs Late Treatment
